How to Stay Safe and Prepared for Natural Disasters

When emergencies strike, being prepared can make all the difference. Whether it's a hurricane, earthquake, or another unexpected event, having a plan and the right supplies on hand can help protect you and your loved ones. Below are essential tips for staying safe, being prepared, and knowing what to do when disaster strikes.

1. Build a Go Bag for Quick Evacuations

A go-bag is a small, lightweight backpack or suitcase with wheels that you can grab at a moment’s notice. It's designed to carry essential items that will sustain you for at least 72 hours during an evacuation. Here’s what you should include:

  • Hand sanitizer, face masks, and sanitary wipes
  • Layered clothing, toiletries, backup eyeglasses, and bug spray
  • Matches, a multipurpose tool, first aid kit, prescription medications
  • Emergency cash, house and vehicle keys, and bottled water
  • Non-perishable foods like granola bars or energy bars
  • Photocopies of essential documents (proof of address, driver’s license, insurance, Social Security cards, medical records) stored in a waterproof bag

2. Prepare an Emergency Kit for Sheltering in Place

If you need to stay home, your emergency kit should contain enough supplies to last for up to two weeks. Store these items in a large, easy-to-access plastic container. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Dried and canned foods, and at least one gallon of water per person per day
  • Prescription medications and first aid supplies
  • Personal hygiene items such as soap, toilet paper, and hand sanitizer

3. Don’t Forget About Your Pets

Your pets are part of the family, and they need their own emergency kit as well. Prepare a kit with these essentials:

  • A pet carrier for each pet with your contact information
  • Two weeks' worth of food and water
  • Litter for cats, poop bags for dogs
  • Copies of medical records, including vaccination status

4. Use Your Phone Wisely

Before you leave home or shelter in place, add your phone to your go-bag. Use your phone sparingly during emergencies to conserve battery life. Consider investing in a portable charger or solar charger to keep your phone powered.

5. Plan Ahead for Evacuations and Communication

Make sure you have a plan in place for how to evacuate safely and how to stay in touch with family members. Know your community’s evacuation routes and have a meeting point for your family. Write down emergency contact numbers and keep them in your go-bag.
